DUBBED NYMPH BODIES

I prefer to dub all the bodies of my nymphs except the large black Montana stonefly nymphs, for which I use the heaviest black wool yarn I can find. Go to your local yarn or craft shop and buy a skein of black wool sweater yarn. It’s almost ¼ inch in diameter, very fuzzy in appearance, and compresses just right when wrapped around the hook. Because of its large diameter, it’s easy to wind over a weighted body of lead-substitute wire. If I choose to weight the average mayfly nymph, it’s a lot easier to create a smooth body with dubbing than it is to use wool. I prefer to use a dubbing mixture with lots of guard hairs in it since most mayfly nymphs are somewhat fatter than the normal dry fly body and often have gills at the thorax or along the sides of the abdomen. If you’re making your own dubbing mixes for nymphs and wet flies, use that section of hair from the center of the back of the skin, where most of the guard hairs are located. Another way to achieve this effect is to have a good supply of bleached and dyed hare’s masks on hand for blending with other furs to arrive at your desired colors.
